The moment when your kids ask “Mama can ________ come over in 15-20 minutes?”
You quickly panic and think but “the house is a mess”! (even if the house is actually fine…) And make a mad dash to… to the kitchen, living room, to what – where do you even begin??!! EEEEEKKK!
Because this happens to me ALL OF THE TIME I’ve found a simple solution to speed cleaning what’s important and getting the job done in under 20 minutes! Phew. So here are my 5 simple speed cleaning tips that I’ve been using for years! And it works!
Here are my 5 Simple Speed Cleaning Tips
1. Laundry Basket Clean-up
If you have a lot of stuff laying around like papers, toys, random items… well, just stuff, then grab an empty laundry basket and start tossing stuff in it! Especially items that would take more than a few seconds to put away in its proper home. Hide the laundry basket in your bedroom closet while you have guests over. Once the coast is clear, you can put those items away where they belong.
2. Load and Empty The Dishwasher if needed
This one is pretty self-explanatory… Empty and/or load the dishwasher. My kids tend to leave the dishes on the counters instead of putting them in the dishwasher (yes – we are still working on that one!). Once the dishes are out of the sink, give the sink a quick wipe down. If you have an extra 30 seconds – take out the garbage and recycling.
3. Microfiber Wipe Down
Once everything is picked up, grab a microfiber cloth/cleaning spray and start wiping things down. Start with the counters, table (chairs if they’re sticky), appliances, and even furniture that may need some dusting. If you have a few extra minutes, this would be a good time to wipe down the front door and any surrounding windows. Our front door has side windows that always need a wipe down. Our 2 dogs sit at the front door with their noses pressed against the window panes, watching people walk by and hoping that someone will walk by with at a dog that they can bark at!
4. Bathroom Clean-up
Use the same microfiber cloth that you used to wipe down the kitchen to wipe down the bathroom. Clean the sink, counters, mirror, and outside of the toilet, if the inside needs cleaning go ahead and give it a clean (use your preferred tool of choice… this one is mine). Take out the bathroom’s garbage if needed and toss that microfiber cloth into the laundry bin.
5. Floors (Vacuum and Mop)
I tend to quickly give the first floor a quick vacuum using my Dyson cord-free vacuum – if there isn’t enough time then I stick with the foyer, kitchen, family room and 1st-floor bathroom. If there’s more time, I will run it over the stairs and loft area near my kid’s bedrooms. Then I give the kitchen/bathroom a quick mop using the Rubber Maid Reveal Mop. I LOVE THIS MOP! I can’t say enough great things about it. Here is my DIY wood floor cleaning recipe.
AND PHEW… You’re DONE!
I hope my 5 simple speed cleaning tips help you the next time you hear – “Mama, can ______ come over?”
